Waterskiing Behind a Wakesurf Boat

Waterskiing Behind a Wakesurf Boat: Is It Possible?

Testing the Centurion Ri257: Can You Actually Ski Behind a 26-Foot Surf Boat?

Watch the full video below, or read the summary of our findings here.

The Big Question

Can you actually waterski behind the "best surf boat on the planet"?

If you listen to traditional boat marketing, the answer is usually "no." The industry has told us for years that you have to choose: if you want a great ski wake, you need a small, flat-bottom boat. If you want a massive surf wave, you need a big, deep-V boat.

The "Crossover" Compromise

To bridge the gap, many manufacturers push "Crossover" boats. These usually feature a flat hull (for skiing) with added surf systems (for surfing). But in our experience, this often results in a boat that doesn't do anything exceptionally well - the surf wave lacks push, and the ski wake is often harder than expected.

Flipping the Script

So, we decided to flip the script. We took the Centurion Ri257 - a massive 26-foot boat known for having one of the biggest surf waves in the world - and put a slalom skier behind it.

The Test Conditions

We didn't tweak the boat for hours. We simply:

  1. Emptied the ballast (0%)
  2. Set the speed for recreational skiing (30-32 MPH)
  3. Deployed the center Stinger Plate to flatten the running attitude

The Results: How Is the Ski Wake?

To be blunt: It is surprisingly good.

In the video, you'll see our skier cutting back and forth across the wake with ease. Here is what we found during the session:

Clean Crossing

The wake is soft and clean. It doesn't have the hard "curb" or white water that knocks you off edge, which is common in many other 24+ foot boats.

Superior Tracking

Because the Centurion has a deep-V hull (Opti-V), it tracks straight as an arrow. When the skier pulls hard against the boat, the tail doesn't slide out - a common issue with flat-bottom crossover boats.

Recreational vs. Tournament

Is this a tournament-level ski wake? No. If you are training for nationals, you still need a dedicated ski boat. But for the 95% of us who are "recreational skiers" - people who want to carve open water in the morning before surfing in the afternoon - this wake is more than sufficient.

The Verdict

The old logic that "you can't ski behind a surf boat" is officially dead.

The deep-V hull design of the Centurion allows it to displace massive amounts of water for surfing when weighted, but slice through the water cleanly when empty.

The Bottom Line

You don't have to compromise on your surf wave to keep the skiers in your family happy. You can have a world-class surf boat that still delivers a fun, smooth ski ride at the crack of dawn.
