Does Gear Ratio Matter in Selecting a Prop?

Yes! In selecting a propeller you must take into account whether the gear ratio in your transmission is a 1:1 ratio, a 1.5:1 ratio or another ratio. Most modern V-drive boats are equipped with a 1.5:1 gear ratio, where most direct drive boats and older V-Drive boats are equipped with a 1:1 gear ratio.  1:1 gear ratio drives are affected more dramatically by prop specification changes than reduced gear drives.  If you are running a reduced gear drive (such as a 1.5:1) you will typically use a propeller with a higher pitch than a drive that has a 1:1 gear ratio.  If you have any questions regarding how your drive system will affect propeller performance, please contact us.
